Policy Advocacy
In coordination with Black Muslim Leadership Council Fund, Black Muslim Leadership Council works on a variety of impactful policy stances and efforts.
Black American Muslims are impacted by the same issues as all Black Americans and Muslim Americans, as well as a variety of issues specific to the Black Muslim community. Our advocacy efforts focus on addressing the vital needs of our community through effective, sustained action with an emphasis on addressing systemic discrimination and oppression.
These efforts are based in and built on the Black Muslim Leadership Council’s extensive relationships with local, state, and federal government officials, as well as our proven track record of success in policy advocacy. Some successful policy change outcomes include, but are not limited to: Eid holiday recognition in Pennsylvania schools; Pennsylvania statewide rule change permitting student athletes to wear hijab and other religious headgear when competing; and the inclusion of halal meals in the Philadelphia School District student lunch program.
Areas of focus include, but are not limited to:
- Economic equity
- Education
- Public safety & gun violence
- Health care, including mental health & Black maternal health
- Social and criminal justice, including prison reform
- Environmental justice
- Affordable housing
- Reparations
- Voting rights
- Immediate ceasefire in Gaza, and resumption of humanitarian aid
